The question whether a college education has paid for some years on the edge of the reform discussions rumble was. It was an another kick in the back of this week if PayPal co-founder, Facebook investor and billionaire Peter Thiel 20 promising young people pursue their entrepreneurial talents offered not to go to College and instead a $100,000. The challenge is no College but not question the College vs., rather we is all about how we define success and encourage a way create it people that works.
How did so many social institutions that run amok, higher education become a bureaucratic, monolithic system driven by profits, ranking and reputation as by openness, creativity, and a sincere desire to erziehen-the next generation of citizens, and we are responsible for the monster that was created. Education has always been the Holy more know Grail with the promotion came the ability, wealth, standing and maybe create an impact on the community. But the request was separated somewhere on the way to the knowledge of the cultivation of wisdom knowledge was something to follow and to have in order to achieve worldly success, while understand how it was a quaint relic of a bygone era in the service for other optimal use.
So what we have done - we told everyone who was the only way to a successful future to go to school and be the ultimate Achiever academic excellence, excelling in sports and extracurricular activities, all with the goal, always in the "best" College and to start the process over again, then to graduate school and repeat. Find remotely considered any reasonable person would this as an effective way for anyone, let alone a young person, their unique talents and skills develop? And with the almighty dollar sign, step up millions of dollars in their eyes, universities spent the idea that their degrees are the only key to future success and happiness.
What is the result of all this focus on degree and advertising? As Professor for sixteen years at a large University I can tell you from first hand, the majority of students in the classroom minimal focus on the value of education for the knowledge and wisdom and are easy to get to walk through the requirements to a degree. University administrators are more focused on gains as support learn effective, constantly shifting resources from the daily classroom activities to the point where a different Professor told me, "there is absolutely no economic incentive in the classroom more teach." Given all these factors, should we be surprised that more and more students are shelves enormous student loan debts only to find that after the jump through all the "right", to find the work rewarding tyres?
Redefining success is the first step in diode, our distorted and abused education system. At the end must simply go through the movements, to achieve a goal and realize that everyone has something unique to contribute to the world as a basis for their success is essential. If we can from this premise to start, each student create a path of lifelong learning, fits his or her talents, skills and passion. Yes, there are foundations, which function in the company knows everyone, and we can a better job allows individuals to this information in a variety of ways to gewinnen-and direct experience, such as Peter Thiel is an important part of the learning process is.
Perhaps instead of starting with an external target level, a piece of paper, the people how smart and qualified to say we, we begin to define students that they are based on the issue and nurture the talents and you the best of abilities that they can effectively then set out in the world. Fueled by her passion, students would naturally attracted to courses, classroom, and experiences that would improve their skills and she would easily take in and the knowledge to assimilate rather than it just in their heads slide until they are asked it again vomiting.
Individuals will be growing, discover then perennial students, evolved and other teaching (Yes!) as they traveled the path that best fits and can be the happiest. Then, the outgrowth of sincere interests and efforts and not the hollow victory after years of suffering by other expectations would external services by money and status. Pollyannaish, perhaps, and yet, I questions to argue anyone you that what we now do in the education system works.
The idea that education is no clear way, happiness and success frightening. I believe that knowledge is of vital importance to our society and even more important is the wisdom to use it well. Wisdom is not on a keyword; It is in an atmosphere of cultivated, where open minds and hearts, share ideas and each other along the way help meet. The time has come for us to verlagern-our educational expectations and experiences and I bet that there are many young people out there who would love the opportunity for this.
