Fix a Scratched Disc

Need information on how to fix a scratched disc? In spite of all the wonders of modern technology, getting a scratched disc is almost unavoidable, whether you have a custom CD or a cheap CD. The delicate surfaces of your DVDs or CDs make them especially vulnerable to nicks and minor scratches, even when you handle them gently. What do you do when you insert your favorite movie in your DVD player, and it pauses on one scene? Fortunately, all hope is not lost. Here is a tried and true guide to fixing your scratched disc:

Clean The Disc
The first thing you should do when you suspect that you have a scratched disc is clean it. Before checking for possible damage, you must remove any oils or dirt from the disc. A clean disc will show scratches easily. To clean it, take one hand and carefully hold the disc by its edges. Be careful not to let your fingers touch the shiny undercoat of the disc. Take a damp, lint-free cloth, and wipe your disc gently. Do not go in circular motions. Take solid strokes across the surface of the disc. After you have cleaned your disc, try to play it again. In many cases, a simple cleaning will fix the problem.

Inspect The Disc
If, after your cleaning, your disc will not play, hold it up to the light. You may need to alter your angle because of the reflective quality on most discs. Search for any imperfections that may be affecting it.

Locate Your Toothpaste
If you do find deeper scratches, it's time to try something that seems outrageous. Believe it or not, toothpaste is an often-used trick to fixing scratched discs. The information contained in your disc is stored within the metal of the disc. The disc's hard outer coating is plastic and used only to protect its inside. Toothpaste will do no harm to the information on your disc. It will affect only the outer layer of the disc. To avoid further scratches, be sure to use plain toothpaste with no abrasive ingredients, such as baking soda. You may also substitute toothpaste with petroleum jelly, creamy peanut butter or a metal polish.
